World of Warcraft and Mac Gaming
I’m surprised at how responsive the Macbook is while gaming. Coming from a Windows background, I was a bit concerned with that, seeing as how mid-90s Macs were notorious for non-gaming. Color me impressed with the Santa Rosa suite with what little gaming I’ve done on the platform.
I’m not much of a PC gamer any longer. At one time in my life, I’d sit at the computer for hours at a time playing whatever current game I could get my hands on, but that’s fallen by the wayside in recent years. It wasn’t until recently that I even considered playing games again, but my fiancee convinced me to take up the World of Warcraft cause all over again.
I was a bit hesitant with the Macbook because of its built-in graphic capabilities, or lack thereof, but it’s actually been a pretty smooth transition from my PC machine to my Macbook. I copied all of my settings over, loaded up the game (which the install was a hair faster on the Mac than the PC, I might add), and jumped right back in. This is the third time I’ve jumped back into the game from the day it was originally launched.
Though I had to put all of my graphic settings at the lowest levels, I was still happy with my experience. Because I tend to do a lot of player vs player combat, the layout of my keyboard is essential. It’s for this reason that the Macbook keyboard irks me. The lack of a number pad to the right, which I tend to put all of my keyboard skills on for quick access, and the fact that I can’t use the CMD button in place of the Ctrl or Alt for my hotkeys are problematic in intense situations, but I’m slowly adjusting. I may get a decent bluetooth wireless keyboard to use while playing that game, though.
If you’re looking for a ton of high end gaming, the Macbook will disappoint, but it can run World of Warcraft just fine. It won’t be the most beautiful thing you’ve ever played but the content and the social nature of the game are what it’s all about anyway. I’m still aiming for a Macbook Pro sometime this year, because I want to do some heavy duty gaming, but my Macbook definitely satisfies with what it can do.
(Note: This topic will be expanded in the future, when I’ve played other games and become more familiar with what the Mac has to offer in terms of native gaming)
