Leopard Crashes Like a Pro

I have to admit, I like the way Leopard handles software crashes. Don’t get me wrong, things don’t crash as often as they did with my Windows machine (which was still not as often as most people because I did a thorough job of keeping my machine clean and functioning), but sometimes software gets a little buggy.

Recently, I was having some problems with World of Warcraft. It kept crashing during an intense gaming session. I never tracked down the problem, so I’m not certain if it was on my end or Blizzard’s, but eventually it dissipated. That was actually my first experience with the way Leopard handles software crashes.

Under Windows XP, if software crashed, it had a tendency to take other programs with it. More often than not, it would screw with hardware drives, which would force a cold reboot to get everything functioning again. I experienced quite a number of problems with both games and standard applications under Windows XP, so the Task Manager was my friend. After a crash, the application in question usually wouldn’t respond, so it was back to the reset button I went.

Leopard handles things a bit differently. After crashing, it will give you the option to either ignore it or relaunch the application. Relaunching generally fixes it but if it crashes again and again, Leopard will ask if you’d like to launch the program with default settings. I did this with World of Warcraft and it seemed to fix my problems, whatever they may have been. In fact, I didn’t have to restart my Macbook once during the ordeal and I was almost certain I would have had to.

This is just one of those little things that makes the OS so usuable. Even when trouble crops up, Leopard lets users take things into their own hands, giving them to the chance to save data or recover from their mistakes.

  1. I’ve been having that same problem with WoW too, is there anyway around that? Lowering the video setting didn’t seem to help so I was wondering if you have a solution?
